066 web.jpg (45313 bytes)IF offers an all encompassing view of the apparel industry.  All the major markets are discussed in terms of the choices (IF factors) that are at play.  A good designer knows the parameters – a great designer understands how to use the constraints of their target market to their advantage.

IF explains logically through both words and visuals, the who, what, why and how of each market and specialty production area covered.  IF understands that the industry is multifaceted and that an understanding of only the women's contemporary market or juniors market puts any aspiring designer at a distinct disadvantage.

IF also focuses on the direct comparison of flats and technical sketches with fashion illustrations of the same garments.  This approach enhances the students’ ability to visualize both the actual proportions with the stylized nature of fashion illustration – an important skill.

IF provides technical sketches for each proportion and specialty area covered.  Technical sketches reflect the huge changes made in the garment manufacturing industry over the last decades.  Although garments may be designed in fashion capitols around the world, they are most likely manufactured in overseas factories, where English is not the spoken language.  In this respect, a technical sketch represents a common language shared by the designer and the manufacturer, regardless of the geographic location and the primary language spoken for both.  The ability to create and read a technical sketch accurately is an absolute imperative in fashion - a true global industry.

IF provides the student with “learning pages” to put them inside the mind of the creator.  By denoting in call out form the choices being made and why, IF strives not to teach the students how to sketch, but rather how to think.
